Every September, on the night of the harvest moon (August 15, the Harvest Moon according to the ancient calendar), the Uneme-Matsuri Festival is held around Sarusawa-ike Pond in Nara Park, which features "gagaku" ancient court music and decorative “Ryuutousen” boats accompanied by women dressed as "uneme" court ladies and other people in historical costumes. “Ryuutousen” means the boat with Dragon’s head in the bow. The festival is a dedication to Uneme, a court lady who drowned herself in the pond after losing the favour of the Emperor Monmu. The emperor then built Uneme-jinja shrine and dedicated it to her.
