Daianji Temple

Japanese Here

Nara was a capital city in Japan from AD710 till AD794. Then there were 6 famous great temples, Todai-ji, Kohfuku-ji, Saidai-ji, Yakushi-ji, Gangou-ji, and Daian-ji.
In this month, we focus to Daian-ji Temple. Especially it was the first (oldest) national temple.
Predecessor of this temple is called Daikan-daiji Temple. When the transfer of Heijo capital (in 710), this was also moved to the present place from Asuka, and was named as Daian-ji Temple. In its vast land, there used to be Great South Gate, middle gate, Halls and seven-stories pagodas which were standing in the east and the west sides. In the part of pre precinct there is Sugiyama ancient tomb.

If you look at Sugiyama ancient tomb, you may think it's a small hill. There are many great ancient tombs in Osaka and Nara prefecture. The biggest one is called the tomb of Emperor Nintoku. The total length of this tomb is 486m, and it is bigger than pyramids in Egypt.
